What is the line between graphic design and front-end programming?

For those of you who have been following us for a long time, whether on the blog, on the web or in real life, Vasco is already a familiar face. He's our Creative Director who also works as a front-end developer, and who, if nothing else, would be a fisherman! Due to the dichotomy and, at the same time, complementarity of the two areas in which he works - design and front-end programming - we share in this article the line that separates (or unites) them.

What is the line between graphic design and front-end programming?

To put this into context, in the world of digital creation, graphic design and front-end programming are two extremely important areas that focus on building visual and functional interfaces. Although they go hand in hand when developing websites, these two areas have different natures, requiring different tools and ways of thinking.

This is actually, according to our Creative Director, the great challenge in reconciling the two areas: creating something very creative but highly functional at the same time. While design has no limits, being a blank canvas, front-end programming has the mission of realizing what has been designed.

Going a little deeper, graphic design focuses on aesthetics, visual composition and communication through graphic elements. Front-end programming, on the other hand, is responsible for transforming these visual ideas into functional interactive experiences for the user.

Graphic design focuses on aesthetics, visual communication and the user experience, for which the storytelling that is built becomes extremely important. The most common tools used are Figma, Adobe XD, Photoshop and Illustrator.

Front-end programming focuses on functionality, structure and the user's interactive behavior with the site. The most common languages and tools are HTML, CSS, JavaScript, React and Vue.

It was the enormous challenge of transforming design into functional code that attracted Vasco to the world of programming. The curiosity to program, to be able, with shorter and more limited tools, to execute the design as we want through the other strategies that are outlined, is undoubtedly motivating and challenging, as it becomes a constant quest to overcome technical issues with a lot of originality, turning something visual, which has no limits, into something real, with which the user can interact and get a spectacular experience from it.

Defining himself as a designer who programs, and not the other way around, our Creative Director assumes that if he had to choose one area, it would always be design. Had Vasco not originally studied painting. We have an artist!
